Welcome to AI Friday news, where we take a look at some of the latest and exciting news from the world of artificial intelligence. The news that will be in today's newsletter includes: the one-year anniversary of ChatGPT, a new handheld eye-scanner for detecting traumatic brain injury, Amazon's new image generator, and Mastercard's new AI-powered shopping service. So let's get started!
1/ ChatGPT after 1 Year of Launch. 💬
It’s officially been one year since ChatGPT launched, a generative AI chatbot developed by OpenAI, has reached over 110 million installs and nearly $30 million in revenue on mobile platforms. The apps make money by selling the ChatGPT Plus subscription via in-app purchases. The $19.99 per month service offers a variety of extra perks, including general access during peak times, faster response times and early access to new features and improvements. ChatGPT's mobile app downloads continue to grow following its spring and summer debuts on iOS and Android, respectively, now topping 110 million. India and the U.S. are nearly neck and neck in terms of the country accounting for the most ChatGPT downloads at 18% and 17.5%, respectively. Still, an analysis of Android data indicates that ChatGPT may not be the most often used AI app. Instead, it ranks number three behind Character AI, where users can create personified AI chatbots, and another similar AI app, Chai.
The firm expects that by year-end 2023, ChatGPT will have added tens of millions more installs and revenue.
2/ Handheld Eye Scanner Detects Traumatic Brain Injury. 🚑
Scientists at the University of Birmingham are developing a handheld eye-scanner for detecting traumatic brain injury. The device, called EyeD, uses a laser to scan the back of the eye and detect biomarkers that can indicate the presence of TBI. EyeD is still in the early stages of development, but researchers hope that it will eventually be used by emergency responders to quickly and accurately diagnose TBI.
3/ Amazon's AI Arsenal Expands with Image Generator. 🖼️
Amazon has announced a new image generator as part of Amazon Titan, the name of the full suite of multimodal foundation models (FMs) now available through Amazon Web Services.
The Amazon Titan Image Generator allows content creators to generate high-quality, realistic images using simple English language prompts—or even by using other images as references. This is particularly useful in business sectors like advertising, e-commerce, and media.
Businesses can now fine-tune these models with proprietary data, the company says, enabling them to generate images that align with their brand identity or specific stylistic preferences.
4/ Mastercard launches Shopping Muse. 🛍️
Mastercard has launched Shopping Muse, a new AI-powered service that helps consumers find the perfect gift. Shopping Muse is a generative AI tool that translates consumers' requests made via a chatbot into tailored product recommendations. It also builds on the context of the conversation over time to provide more personalized recommendations.
Conclusion:
AI continues to evolve at an astonishing rate, bringing about innovative solutions and transforming various industries. As AI continues to advance, we can expect even more groundbreaking applications that will shape the future.
